Silas Sales: the Software
Engineer working with soul
From Canada to Australia
Silas Sales’ love for technology was born in a small town two hours north of Toronto, Canada. It was there that he first experienced the excitement of learning how computers and software programs worked, and how they could influence our society.
As a young Software Engineering student travelling between Canada and Australia, Silas realised he wanted to use his skills to make a positive contribution to the world.
More than a year after joining us as a Software Engineer, Silas has been busy breaking new ground in the development of our products and services. Still in the early stages of his career, he’s thrilled to be establishing himself as a ‘jack of all trades’ in our growing Engineering department.
“I develop and improve our backend systems. This includes all of the consumer-facing aspects of our website. Every day is different; one day I could be adding a new function on the website that helps parents monitor their kids’ online activities, the next I could be providing support for our IT department.”
Inspired by technology
Since joining us, Silas has pursued every opportunity in order to learn about the industry he’s proud to craft his career in.
However, it wasn’t always this way. Silas shares that throughout high school he never saw himself as the ‘studious’ type. But after spending much of his teenage years building computers and growing his tech skills as a hobby, he was encouraged to pursue a Bachelor of Software Engineering. Looking back, he says it was one of the best decisions he has made.
Throughout his degree, Silas spent months travelling between his hometown in Canada and Australia to be with his partner. It was during one of his visits to Australia that he first came to know about us, and scored the internship of his dreams within our Engineering Team.
“As I completed my internship, I realised Linewize was the best place for me to grow my skills and my career. When I returned to Australia to live permanently, I reached out to them, and they asked me to join the team full-time; of course I said yes!”
Silas says each day offers an exciting new opportunity to learn, develop, and utilise his skills as a Software Engineer. And he feels completely supported by us to do so.
“I thrive on variety, and the fact I can have that while making a meaningful difference is fantastic. I feel confident when facing new and exciting challenges – and it’s great to know my team is right behind me when I need the support. Everyone is ready to collaborate and brainstorm solutions and ideas. It’s a very invigorating department to work in.”
Guided by good
As an individual guided strongly by his moral compass, Silas is certain he’s found his place with us.
“I wanted to work for an organisation that had a positive social impact. We are different; we have a mission, and we are dedicated to achieving it.”
When asked what advice he’d offer to Software Engineers looking to make waves in tech, Silas says it’s all about maintaining flexibility on the path to innovation.
“We’re growing fast. So having the ability to think creatively and constructively is a great strength to have. We’re working on so many projects, and we all get to contribute towards the final result. In a lot of companies, you’re limited to your job description – but here, the sky’s the limit.”
